Russian President Putin to visit India for military and energy deals https://jeffersonvillage.org/russian-president-putin-to-visit-india-for-military-and-energy-deals/ Mon, 06 Dec 2021 07:21:58 +0000 https://jeffersonvillage.org/russian-president-putin-to-visit-india-for-military-and-energy-deals/ Russian President Vladimir Putin will arrive in India on Monday for his second overseas trip since the pandemic, seeking to strengthen military and energy ties with a traditional ally courted by Washington. Russian President Vladimir Putin will arrive in India on Monday for his second overseas trip since the pandemic, seeking to strengthen military and energy ties with a traditional ally courted by Washington.

In its efforts to deal with a rising China, Washington has established the QUAD security dialogue with India, Japan and Australia, raising concerns in Beijing and Moscow.

India was close to the Soviet Union during the Cold War, a relationship that endured, with New Delhi calling it a “special and privileged strategic partnership.”

“The friendship between India and Russia has stood the test of time,” Modi told Putin at a virtual summit in September. “You have always been a great friend of India.”

This is only the Russian leader’s second overseas trip since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic – he skipped G20 and COP26 summits this year – after a summit in June with US President Joe Biden in Geneva.

“It’s extremely symbolic,” said Nandan Unnikrishnan of the New Delhi-based Observer Research Foundation think tank.

“It shows how much they don’t want the relationship to stagnate or slow down for lack of something on the Russian side. “

But Putin faces complex regional dynamics, with growing tensions between India and Russia’s traditional ally, China, following deadly clashes in a disputed Himalayan region.

“Russia’s influence in the region is very limited,” said Tatiana Belousova of the OP Jindal World University in Haryana, “mainly because of its close ties to China and its reluctance to act in dissonance with the Chinese regional interests “.

Quite remarkable

The Kremlin said last week that talks would be dominated by defense and energy issues, with Russian energy giant Rosneft boss Igor Sechin also traveling amid “a number of important energy deals” were on the table.

Russia has long been a key arms supplier to India, which seeks to modernize its armed forces, and one of its most prestigious current contracts is for the S-400 long-range surface-to-air missile defense system. .

The deal, worth more than $ 5 billion, was signed in 2018 and deliveries are believed to have started, but it threatens to disrupt emerging relations between New Delhi and Washington.

The United States has threatened sanctions under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), which seeks to subdue Russia, and the State Department said last week that no decision had been made on exemptions for India.

“It is quite remarkable that India has always decided to go ahead with the S-400 agreement, despite the disapproval of the United States,” Belousova said.

New Delhi has long sought to diversify its military imports, but analysts believe it may take some time to move away from Russia.

Military equipment was “paramount” for India given the “unrelenting” tensions with Pakistan, according to Unnikrishnan. “You will try to feed whatever is necessary to guarantee this. “

India also wants to increase domestic production and has started a joint venture with Russia to manufacture AK-203 assault rifles.

India and Russia normally hold annual summits, but the last in-person leaders’ meeting took place on the sidelines of the 2019 BRICS summit in Brazil.

“The leaders will review the state and prospects of bilateral relations and discuss ways to further strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries,” India’s foreign ministry said in a statement last month.

The foreign and defense ministers of the two countries will also meet on Monday.

Regime forces rushed into a crowd of protesters in Kyimyindaing County in Yangon early Sunday morning, killing at least five people before arresting about 15 more.

Witnesses told Myanmar Now that the incident occurred minutes after a flash mob formed around 9 a.m. to demand an end to military rule.

Video footage of the incident shows a vehicle speeding past cars as protesters approach, which can be seen scattering seconds before impact. Moments later, the sound of gunfire can be heard over the screams and screams of the protesters.

“The car accelerated and hit the demonstrators. Four or five were thrown into the air, ”said a member of the protest group that organized the demonstration.

One of the protesters who managed to escape told Myanmar Now by phone that he was hit with the butt of a rifle after being hit by the vehicle.

“I think they hit me to make me pass out so they can continue to arrest other protesters,” he said.

“I think there were only about ten,” he added, referring to the junta forces responsible for the attack.

According to a local resident who witnessed the incident, soldiers beat protesters who had fallen to the ground and pointed their guns at people watching from their apartments.

The witness, who requested anonymity, said soldiers only allowed an ambulance to enter the area after they finished washing the blood from the street.

Despite the deadly attack, another protest took place in Hlaing Township in Yangon later that day.

The junta’s use of lethal force against anti-regime protesters did little to stop public protests in resistance to the February 1 coup in Yangon and other cities across the country.

Zaw Min Tun, spokesman for the regime, was not available for comment on Sunday’s attack.

Since taking power just over 10 months ago, the junta has murdered at least 1,300 civilians and arrested thousands more, some of whom have died in custody after being tortured.

Meanwhile, clashes escalated between the military and armed resistance groups in many parts of the country, including Chin and Kayah (Karenni) states and Sagaing and Magway regions.

Ethnic armed groups in Kachin and Kayin (Karen) states have also fought regime forces with increasing frequency since the coup, which plunged much of the country into chaos.

In many remote areas, regime forces suffered heavy casualties, triggering “clean-up operations” that forced tens of thousands of civilians to flee their homes.

FREDONIA – The village council on Monday ratified the water and sewer contracts with the State University of New York at Fredonia.

After several months of preparation, the contracts went 3-1, with village board member James Lynden voting no. Lynden objected that the resolution approving the contracts did not give any details about them.

Village Clerk Annemarie Johnston provided copies of the contracts on Wednesday.

The contracts charge the college the standard rates per gallon that everyone in the village pays. SUNY Fredonia must install and maintain its own water and sewer side lines.

The agreements are each for a five-year term and the college has the option of renewing them for a maximum of two two-year terms. Each party must give six months’ notice if they want to terminate a contract.

The water contract contains this clause: “It is hereby agreed that the village will ensure that the current connection to the Dunkirk hydraulic district… or other need.

In addition, SUNY Fredonia will pay the village $ 81,330 to pay what it owes under the previous water contract.

In addition, the college has the mandate to take water conservation measures according to village directives, on the advice of the “Lack of water due to drought or emergency”.

At Monday’s meeting, Lynden wanted to table the resolution “for lack of content”. No one followed him and he ended up voting “no.”

“The contracts were pretty well crafted, but as far as the audience is concerned, I think the lack of content (of the resolution) is the reason… for my vote,” he added. he said.

“In these contract negotiations this has been going on for quite some time and I remember starting the process at the start of the year”, said Roger Britz, member of the village board. “We brought these negotiations to the board on a number of occasions, and if the public had questions during those times, there were plenty of opportunities to ask them at that time.”

“I felt that SUNY also had specific questions that the board were happy to work with that needed to be answered. “ he added. “Trustee Lynden also had some questions to consider before settling this contract. “

“I would also like to add that these contracts have been reviewed by our legal advisor on several occasions over several months”, Administrator EvaDawn Bashaw said. “Every time he was questioned and fired by us, he was treated by our lawyers.”

Katherine al rashdan

A few real-life elves have been spotted in Patchogue Village, and, if you’re lucky, you may be able to spot them by December 23, as part of “Elf’n Around Patchogue,” an event by a month that offers deals to buyers on Main Street wherever the elves are in. “Elf’n Around” has its perks.

For the second year, David Kennedy, Executive Director of the Patchogue Chamber, and Michele Cayea, Director of Education and Outreach at the Patchogue-Medford Library, donned leprechaun costumes to participate in the joyous event. The duo even posed for photos which were used to create life-size cardboard cut-out images, which will be placed in front of various stores throughout the campaign. Wherever the cardboard cutouts are, this is where today’s deals are.

“I like to bring energy. Anyone who knows me knows that I will wear any type of crazy costume to educate local businesses, ”Cayea said.

Kennedy said the event took a life of its own, with Patchogue fans from near and far flocking to the chamber’s social media pages for updates on where the elves will be.

“We like to bring people to the stores – there are a lot of shopping possibilities downtown,” Kennedy said.

To kick off the campaign, the real Elf David and Elf Michele visited the Patchogue Theater for the Performing Arts for Small Business on Saturday, November 27. The duo, along with chamber volunteers Jo Bennett and Gloria Burton, handed out small tote bags filled with loot from local businesses, including ChapStick, water bottles, and even free beer tickets. at Village Idiot Pub. Inside the hall of the theater, the young buyers received bags of gifts and invited to take a photo with Santa Claus.

For those walking along Main Street that day, the elves were a joyous sight and a reminder that the Patchogue vacation is in full swing.

“I think they’re festive,” said Mike Panzarino, a resident of East Patchogue who walked past the theater and saw the elves in action. “It’s good. And I also think it’s great that the holiday parade is back. I missed it a lot.

Panzarino was referring to the Patchogue holiday parade, which returned to the village for its 59th year after a hiatus due to COVID-19.

On Sunday November 28, Elf David and Elf Michele spent their first official day at work: Elf David at Island Kava and Elf Michele at Tranquility Within. As promised, shoppers were presented with deals in today’s stores. Wherever buyers see the cardboard elves (they are impossible to miss), they should let the seller know and the seller will notify the buyer of the exact offer, according to Kennedy.

“Patchogue is a fun town. That’s what we found with this particular campaign, ”he said.

“Elf’n Around Patchogue” is inspired by the legend of the Elf on a Shelf, a Christmas tradition where one of Santa’s helpers is sent from the North Pole to keep an eye on the children, sitting on a bookshelf and taking notes on whether the child was mean or nice. Legend has it that, throughout the month of December, the elf moves alone in different shelves of the house (without the help of mom or dad).

“It’s something kids recognize and it’s a fun thing for parents too. When they see us in the store, it’s funny; it is fanciful; it’s festive, ”Cayea said.

For updates and to see photos of the elves, visit the chamber’s Facebook and Instagram pages @PatchogueChamber.
