BEIJING: The United States will have to “pay a price” for its diplomatic boycott of the Winter Olympics in Beijing, China said on Tuesday (December 7th), just weeks after talks aimed at easing strained relations between the two nations.

On Monday, the White House said US government officials would boycott the Winter Olympics over China’s human rights “atrocities”, though US athletes are free to attend to see them. to compete.

The US boycott, encouraged for months by some members of Congress and rights groups, comes despite an effort to stabilize ties, with a video meeting last month between US President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

China opposes the boycott and will take “resolute countermeasures,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said Tuesday at a regular press conference in Beijing.

“The United States will pay a price for its wrong actions,” he said, without giving details. “Let’s all wait and see.”

The United States is set to host the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and is preparing a bid to host the 2030 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

When asked if China would consider a diplomatic boycott of the Olympics to the United States, Zhao said the American boycott had “damaged the foundations and the atmosphere” for sports exchanges and cooperation on the Games. which he compared to “lifting a stone to crush his own.” foot”.

He called on the United States to exclude sports politics, saying the boycott went against Olympic principles.

Chinese media and academics have criticized the American boycott.

“It is foolish and foolish for the United States to do this,” Wang Wen, a professor at Renmin University in Beijing, told Reuters, adding that other great powers might do the same with Washington when it comes down to it. t was the turn of the United States to host the Games.

“For those American politicians who weren’t asked to say they are organizing a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics, it is simply a matter of ‘expressing unrequited love’,” the agency said. Xinhua official press release in a comment.

The Biden administration has pointed to what Washington calls genocide against Muslim minorities in China’s far west region of Xinjiang as the reason for its boycott.

China denies all rights violations.

“The diplomatic or official representation of the United States would deal with these games as usual in the face of the gross human rights violations and atrocities committed by the PRC in Xinjiang, and we simply cannot do it,” the said on Monday. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki referring to the People’s Republic of China.

“The athletes of Team USA have our full support,” Psaki added at a press conference. “We will support them 100% as we encourage them from home.”

George W Bush was the last US President to attend a Games Opening Ceremony, hosting Salt Lake City in 2004. Vice President Mike Pence attended the 2018 Winter Games at the resort South Korean seaside resort of Pyeongchang.

It was not clear whether other countries would join the United States, although US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the allies had been consulted on a “shared approach”.

The Canadian Foreign Ministry said it “remains deeply disturbed by disturbing reports of human rights violations in China” and continues to discuss the matter with its partners and allies.

The Australian and Japanese governments have said they are also still reflecting on their positions.

New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson said the country will not be sending government officials, but the move was largely based on concerns over COVID-19 and predated the US boycott.

Last week Stefano Sannino, head of the European Union’s diplomatic service, said boycotts were a matter for individual member states, not the EU’s common foreign policy.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is the only leader of a major country to have accepted an invitation.

Human rights groups hailed the move, but said Washington could do more to hold China accountable.

However, some political analysts have said the boycott was less of a threat to the Games and more of an appearance issue that Beijing fueled with threats of retaliation.

“It would have been a non-story if it were even less true,” said Lisa Delpy Neirotti, professor of sports management at the George Washington University School of Business.

“We don’t usually send a large government delegation anyway, especially during COVID times.”

Diplomatic boycott puts corporate Olympic sponsors in “a sticky position” but has raised less concern than a comprehensive measure banning athletes, said Neal Pilson, former president of CBS Sports who oversaw the rights deals Olympic Games broadcast.

US State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters the government would not dictate private sector practices, but said businesses should be “fully aware” of events in Xinjiang.

A spokesperson for NBCUniversal, owned by Comcast, said it would broadcast the games as scheduled.

It was an emotional day for the sellers of a four-bedroom property in Sutton when their roughly 30-year-old home sold for $ 4,855,000 at auction last week. The sellers, who are downsizing the 10-acre property, shed tears after Wednesday night’s auction. “It changed my life,” said Luton Properties sales agent Miriana Cavic. The off-market sales campaign only lasted two weeks before the house went up for auction with two passionate bidders. MORE PROPERTY NEWS: The property, located less than 30 minutes drive from Canberra CBD, features a lagoon pool, tennis court, orchard, three dams and paddocks. It is the highest selling price for a home in the village of NSW, surpassing the previous record of $ 4.4 million for a 90-hectare property sold in June. Ms Cavic said the sellers took tremendous pride in the house, completing renovations and extensions over the years. But buyers were very impressed with the manicured gardens surrounding the house. “The gardens were amazing. If you sit outside, all you see is green, hedges and trees,” Ms. Cavic said. “Everyone who came to see him just said, ‘Oh my God, the pictures don’t do him justice.’ Ms Cavic said the new owner is moving from Sydney and was among a growing number of people considering changing trees in the area. “We are noticing that a lot more people from the highway are coming to Canberra and wanting rural property,” she said. “You can live in the country, but you don’t sacrifice the lifestyle of being close to the city.” The median selling price of homes in Sutton was $ 1.45 million in August, up from $ 1.12 million the year before, according to data from CoreLogic. It has been a busy auction week across Australia, with 4,136 homes auctioned in the combined capitals. Canberra reported 179 auctions, with a preliminary clearance rate of 82.1%, according to CoreLogic. Our journalists work hard to provide local and up-to-date news to the community. Slow travel on a budget

By Patrick Robertson

The biggest cost of travel today is accommodation.

You can spend $ 10,000 per month on a condo in Hawaii or you can rent an estate for $ 25,000 per day in Palm Springs. There is no limit to how much you can spend on hosting. The trick is to get amazing accommodations at an affordable price. It can be done with research, persistence, timing, and a little luck.

I was able to rent an amazing house named Blue Hawaii on the southeastern tip of Oahu which has been the scene of many Hawaii-5-0 movies and episodes and normally rents for $ 20,000 per week.

I paid $ 3,500 for a week in this wonderful house. The views were incredible. The retractable windows were left open all week. The home captured the ocean breezes with no air conditioning or heating required. It had an infinity pool, ocean access, multiple entertainment areas, a large gourmet kitchen, and an outdoor kitchen. It was one of those houses that we did not want to leave, it had so much to offer.

I rented the Dalmore House in the north of Scotland for only $ 3,500 for the week. There were 10 of us celebrating my birthday and it only cost us $ 350 per person for seven nights. The baronial mansion is so big that I got lost inside it several times.

The estate was 40 acres with approximately 10 acres of gardens. Next to the estate runs the Alness stream which is a premier trout fishing stream. The village of Alness is a lovely 20 minute walk along the creek or through pastors on horseback. We had a wonderful time hiking the trails and playing English garden games, plus wonderful dinners and board games each evening.

Not all great stays have to be great places. One of our nicest stays was a week in a small sugar shack on a coffee plantation on the island of Hawaii for $ 400. These cabins were new and had all modern conveniences including granite countertops, all new appliances, and a large spa-like tiled shower.

With resources, know-how, and planning, housing can be cheap and it can even be free.

We have performed 20 free home exchanges worldwide; London, Paris, Miami and Ottawa to name a few. All for free. We have been in the home exchange business since 2005. There are many home exchange sites on the Internet. Prices range from free to $ 1,000 per year. As of this writing, I have signed up for free on a new home exchange site run by a couple from England.

They offer free lifetime memberships to the first 1,000 members. I thought, what is this?

Home swapping isn’t for everyone. There is the issue of trust. People fear going home to a damaged house or having something stolen. When we first considered doing home exchanges, we had these concerns. We never had a problem. Our house has always been immaculate.

It takes a lot of research, especially if you are looking for synchronous exchanges when you are at their home at the same time as you are at them. We were able to do non-synchronous exchanges where you go to your home at different times. For example, this can happen if they want to come skiing in the winter and want them up in the fall.

Do you like pets? You can get free accommodation for pet sitting. A website that I follow currently has 3,670 active sites. One place I looked at in San Diego had a fenced backyard which is a dog water park with slides, waterfalls, climbing rocks, a river, and a deep pool for their three active dogs. Websites looking for volunteer labor offer free board and lodging for a few hours of work per day. There are literally thousands of positions available at all times.

The final tip for free accommodation is to rent out your accommodation. We usually go two months in a row. Our insurance requires that the house be checked every three days. We travel too much and too long to ask our friends and neighbors to look after the house.

We have no problem renting our place during the high and middle seasons. We use this money to offset our accommodation costs when we travel. We usually rent our house below market price to people recommended by friends. Someone who needs a place for a few months. It works well for both of us.

In the last three articles, I’ve covered cheap and free air travel, car rental, and accommodation. Next month I will cover travel insurance and stay healthy and safe when you travel. Visit my website for links to some of the websites mentioned in this article.
